How to Get More Google Reviews as a Handyman

When to ask, what to text, how to make it one tap, and how to answer bad reviews, so a handyman business gets a steady flow of Google reviews.

How to Get More Google Reviews as a Handyman

A homeowner choosing between three handymen on Google looks at two numbers: the star rating and how many reviews. A handyman with 4.9 stars and 85 reviews gets the call over one with 5.0 and 6 reviews. Reviews also help you rank in the map. The good news: handyman customers are usually happy and grateful, because you fixed something that bugged them for months. You just have to ask well.

Ask at the right moment

The best moment is right after the customer sees the finished job: the TV is up with no wires showing, the door closes with one finger, the hole in the wall is gone. Say it in person:

"Glad you like it. Reviews really help a small business like mine. Can I text you the link?"

Most people say yes. Then send the text within an hour, before the moment fades.

Make it one tap

Google gives you a direct review link in your Business Profile ("Ask for reviews"). Send that link, not "search for us on Google". Every extra step loses half the people.

What to text

Keep it short and personal:

"Hi Laura, this is Mike from Fix It Fast. Thanks again for today. If you have a minute, a quick Google review helps a lot: [link]"

If they do not respond, send one reminder two or three days later. Not more.

Ask them to mention the job

Reviews that mention the job help you show up for that job. You can say: "If you mention the TV mounting, that helps other people find us." Do not write the review for them or tell them what to say beyond that.

Make it automatic

The handymen with the most reviews do not remember to ask more often. They have a system that sends the request after every paid job. With automatic review requests, the text goes out when the invoice is paid, so you never forget on a busy day.

How many reviews do you need?

Look at the top three handymen in your map results. Aim to pass the third one within six months, then keep going. A steady pace matters too: two new reviews a week looks better to customers and to Google than 30 in one month and then nothing.

If you do 8 to 10 jobs a week and ask everyone, two or three reviews a week is realistic.

What not to do

  • Do not pay for reviews or offer discounts in exchange for them. It breaks Google's rules and can get your reviews removed
  • Do not ask only the happy ones through a filter. Google does not allow review gating
  • Do not write fake reviews or have friends who never hired you post them
  • Do not ask family members. Google can spot it

Do not forget the regulars

Property managers, realtors and repeat homeowners are your best reviewers, and owners often forget to ask them because they feel like friends. Ask once, after a job they were especially happy with. A review that says "I have used them for every repair in our three rentals" carries more weight with new customers than ten one-line ratings.

Answering reviews

Reply to every review within a day or two.

Good review: thank them by name and mention the job. "Thanks, Laura. Glad the TV is up and the wires are out of sight. Call anytime."

Bad review: stay calm. Reply once, briefly, with facts and an offer to fix it. "Sorry the door is still rubbing. I would like to come back at no charge and adjust it. Please call me at..." Future customers read your reply more than the complaint. A calm answer can win more trust than a perfect score.

Catch problems before they become reviews

The review request text can also catch unhappy customers before they post. If someone replies "actually the patch is still visible," call them and fix it. Most bad reviews come from customers who felt ignored, not from the job itself.

Put the reviews to work

Show your Google rating and a few recent reviews on your website, near the price and the booking button. That is where a visitor decides. A handyman website can show them on every job page. For the rest of your Google setup, read the Google Business Profile guide for handymen.

Frequently asked questions

How do I ask a customer for a Google review?

In person, right after they see the finished job, then text them the direct review link from your Google Business Profile within an hour.

Can I give a discount for a review?

No. Offering anything in exchange for reviews breaks Google rules and can get reviews removed. Ask every customer, make it easy, and let them say what they want.
